5.11b Sport Rock Springs Buttress

Happy Hour at the Sky Lounge

A classic three-pitch sport route on the far left side of Center Buttress — named for its granite belay chair.

Climber on sport rock under blue sky at Rock Springs Buttress — Sky Lounge area

In July 2015, Wesley Gooch and Tyler Bergquist established a classic new three-pitch sport route at Rock Springs Buttress at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort.

Sky Lounge (5.11b) charges up the far left side of the Center Buttress. Its name-defining feature is a huge ledge with a built-in granite belay chair — kick back and enjoy the views while you belay the airy final pitch.

Every pitch is excellent; the 2nd and 3rd are particularly good as 5.10 pitches. Teams that can’t muster the 5.11b first pitch may bypass via Ptarmigan Tower (5.9 mixed) to the right, then traverse back on a two-bolt linkup.

Pitch notes

All belays are bolted with good ledges.

  • P1 — 5.11b

Crux immediately off the ground; sequential heel hooks. Powerful overhanging bottom half, cruiser top. Optional bypass via Ptarmigan Tower.

  • P2 — 5.10c

Roof to a blunt arête; final 40 feet littered with huge jugs. Classic.

  • P3 — 5.10a

Rewarding 5.10a with brilliant position — technical edgy crimps. Lower back to the Sky Lounge ledge.

Location

Sky Lounge sits just left of Ptarmigan Tower on the far left side of Center Buttress. Scramble scree under the route and traverse an easy 5th-class ledge to a bolted belay. Bolts are painted dark brown.

Gear & rappel

  • ~12 sport draws
  • All belay/rappel anchors bolted with rap rings
  • A 60 m rope is plenty
