Above Boulder, Wyoming’s Boulder Lake trailhead and summer homes, near the edge of the Wilderness Boundary, is a cluster of large granite domes nicknamed “The Ranch.” Although the formations always had obvious climbing potential, they remained relatively unexplored until summer 2010, when most of the routes listed in the climbing guide were established.
Area character
As of 2011, most routes were easy (5.4–5.10) with potential for harder climbing on steeper domes. Until harder lines go up, Boulder Lake can serve as a training ground for beginning traditional climbers comfortable with exploration and adventure climbing.
Wear a helmet. The area is new to climbing; many routes have only a few ascents. Expect loose rock and dirty cracks.
New route potential
Only a small fraction of the domes have been explored. The largest formations have yet to be climbed; at least two walls hold multi-pitch promise. South of Thunderdome, overhanging walls await stronger parties — approaches may require rappels. Rumors persist of a lofty alpine buttress further up the main trail.
