180° South to screen June 4 in Jackson Hole
as fundraiser for the Teton Boulder Project

Acclaimed film mixes adventure, environmentalism,
story of ‘funhog’/Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard

About The Film & Event Watch the Trailer | Event Poster

The acclaimed film 180 South, the story of one of the most unique environmentalists of our time, told through the lens of an infamous 5,000-mile road trip in 1968 and a modern-day adventurer retracing that sojourn, will screen June 4 in Jackson Hole at the Center for the Arts as a benefit for the Teton Boulder Project.

The evening is being presented by outerlocal, an adventure-sports web venture scheduled to launch in Jackson Hole this summer. Outerlocal is donating all proceeds from the evening to the Teton Boulder Project, a nonprofit effort to build a bouldering park and historical retrospective to Teton climbing at the base of Snow King Mountain.

180 South tells the story of Yvon Chouinard, a pioneering climber and founder of the outdoor clothing company Patagonia. In 1968, Chouinard drove a second-hand van with four fellow ‘funhogs,’ including Doug Tompkins, who founded The North Face, from California to southern Patagonia to try to climb Mt. Fitzroy, exploring untouched mountain ranges and un-surfed coastline along the way. The trip is legendary among outdoor aficionados.

But rather than focus solely on Chouinard or the 1968 trip, the movie melds footage from the trip with footage from a trip by American adventurer Jeff Johnson, who – inspired by the original trip – sets out to follow the same route, hoping to find his own adventure along the way in the spirit of his heroes. As Johnson travels, his eyes open to the see environmental disasters that threaten these places as well as the human triumphs working to save them. The evening will begin with a pre-party at 6 p.m. Wine, Snake River Brewing beer, dinners and desserts from the Everest Momo Shack, a robust silent auction and a DJ are open to the public, regardless of whether people are attending the film. A raffle will include a Weekend Warrior ski pass at the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort. The film ($20) starts at 8:30 p.m.

In addition, Entre Prises, the climbing wall manufacturer hired to build the Teton Boulder Project’s artificial boulders, will be on hand at the pre-party to discuss its initial site plans. 1% for the Tetons will present its finishing “One28” fundraising drive (the Teton Boulder Project is a finalist). And art openings at the Center will combine to make the evening a festive one.

As well, Teton Boulder Project and Leadership Jackson Hole, a leadership training program that is volunteering to support TBP, recently sponsored an art contest for local elementary school students. The students were asked to apply their talents to interpret Jackson Hole’s rich climbing heritage, a contest designed to raise awareness about the history of climbing in the Tetons in the process. The winners of the contest will have their art displayed during the event.
